Sheep To Shelf™

Duckworth is proud to be the world's only source-verified, 100% Montana-grown Merino Wool clothing company. Our dedicated team carefully manages every step of the process, from raw fiber to finished garments. Knowing  what makes Merino Wool unique is our business.

Starting at our ranch in Dillon, Montana, Duckworth’s open-range Merino sheep live between 5,000’ and 9,500’ elevation. Temperatures range from -40 to over 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the wilderness where our sheep graze on natural grasses and Montana wildflowers found on remote mountainsides. The unpredictable and rugged conditions of the Northern Rockies result in a rare type of Merino Wool that other wool clothing brands can’t reproduce: an incredibly soft, durable fiber with exceptional loft and breathability thanks to an unparalleled degree of "crimp" within the fleece. With knit clothing, you want a lot of stretch and comfort, and that fiber gives it a unique natural stretch.

Merino Wool from Duckworth’s sheep ranch is graded for quality and selected for its end use. Then we spin those choice fibers into a proprietary yarn. The spinning, knitting, and dyeing process is part science and part art. It requires specialized know-how, trusted American partners, and the long-term vision of a fourth-generation ranching family from Montana. Each Merino sheep produces anywhere from 8 to 14 pounds of wool, which makes about 8-10 shirts.

A deep understanding of the manufacturing process allows us to find opportunities for innovation at every stage of development, resulting in breakthrough proprietary wool clothing and practices. Our ultralight Vapor Wool and Maverick fabrics, ultra-soft-yet-durable Powder fabric, and our WoolCloud insulation were born from this process.

Duckworth Merino Wool Fabrics

            • A proprietary blend of fine micron Merino Wool, cellulose (modal, a recycled bamboo fiber), and recycled Polyester, Duckworth’s Vapor Wool produces an ultra-fast-wicking and naturally cooling single jersey fabric. The cooling sensation is due to conductive "re-evaporation," which kicks in during any form of physical exertion.

              • 38% Montana-Grown Merino Wool, 50% recycled Polyester, 12% Modal (recycled bamboo fiber)
              • Made in the USA

            • Named after Maverick Mountain in Montana’s Beaverhead range (and the rule-defying outdoor athletes that rock these expedition-grade fabrics), Maverick and Maverick Peak are real-deal 100% Merino Wool baselayers. Both Maverick and Maverick Peak have an ultra-soft jersey fabric with all-natural stretch (no added lycra or polymers). The natural antimicrobial profile of Merino Wool means it requires infrequent washing and will not stink.

            • Waffle knit traps dry air in huge air pockets against the skin, creating a buffer that regulates core comfort with unparalleled results. For the first time since its inception, Duckworth has re-imagined this world-famous knit using Merino Wool. We named this fabric Polaris. We don't mean to brag, but Polaris is quite possibly the world's lightest, warmest fabric. Ever. Period. Full stop.

              • 80% Montana-Grown Merino Wool, 20% Recycled Polyester

            • Named after a jagged, rock-covered mountain in Montana's Beaverhead Range, Comet is a heavyweight Merino Wool baselayer. Ultra-durable Comet boasts a natural-technical mashup, combining a pure Merino Wool outer layer with a recycled polyester inner layer. Why that particular combo? Polyester is hydrophobic, meaning it will wick sweat and moisture right off your skin and into the hydrophilic wool layer. It gets better: wool chemically begins to get even warmer when introduced to water and water vapor, adding a whole new degree of heat to Comet's high-tech performance.

            • Our baselayer Powder line, perfected in the high-altitude mountain ranges of Western Montana, is the pinnacle of cozy goodness. It features an engineered Merino Wool fleece composition and a brushed-soft liner for direct-to-skin comfort. Powder is the uncontested champion of Merino Wool mid-layers, wicking moisture, trapping heat, and staying oh-so-soft.

            • Shockingly light and with a high breathability factor, WoolCloud's "wool batting" filling holds its warmth and shape better than any down or synthetic jacket filler, and is completely renewable to boot. By using thicker Merino Wool fibers that are not chosen for fine, next-to-skin garments, we are able to maximize the effectiveness of coarse wool's incredible insulating properties without letting any of our shorn wool go to waste. A water- and wind-resistant exterior and lining make WoolCloud a must-have for foul weather conditions.

              • Filling made with 80% Montana-Grown Merino, 20% PET (adhesive)
              • Water- and wind-resistant lightweight rip-stop Polyester exterior and lining
